VERTICAL AXIS 75 of the Egnatia Motorway Komotini- Nymfaia- Greek Borders to Bulgaria” & VERTICAL AXIS 80 of the Egnatia Motorway “MANDRA- PSATHADES”

EGNATIA ODOS AE would like to announce that on September 9, at 12:00, Vertical Axis 75 of the Egnatia Motorway “Komotini- Nymfaia- Greek Borders to Bulgaria” of a length of approximately 17 km was given to traffic. The road is connected to Komotini and the Egnatia Motorway through the existing road network.

Vertical Axis 75 is part of Pan European Axis IX, connecting the Egnatia Motorway with the Makaza Border Checkpoint (Bulgaria) and the main road network of Bulgaria.

The completion of the axis’ construction is a project of first priority, as it contributes to the connection of Northern Greece with the Balkan countries and the enhancement of accessibility of the areas affected, enhancing the national development strategy of transport.

The intention of constructing the Axis was expressed in the Protocol of Collaboration signed between Greece and Bulgaria, which determined the basic technical characteristics of the road for the axis as a whole, namely the standard cross section (width of 7,5m./10,5m.) and the design velocity of 80 km/h. The section of the axis given to traffic involves 2 intersections, 3 underpasses and 5 tunnels of a total length of 1,75 km. The greatest part of the section crosses a mountainous terrain, entailing the construction of several high cuts and embankments.

The construction cost of this section amounts to 90 M €, within the framework of OP- RAPUD of the 3rd CSF, which is incorporated into the OP/Enhancement of Accessibility of the NSRF.

We would like to point out that vehicles of up to 3.5 tons and busses are allowed to travel along with section for a period of 6 months, while the hazardous goods vehicles’ traffic will be prohibited.

EGNATIA ODOS AE would also like to announce that on September 9, the last 500 km part km of section “Mandra- Psathades” of the Egnatia Motorway Vertical Axis 80 “Ardanio- Ormenio”, which is connected to Didimoticho by pass was given to traffic.

The opening to traffic of this section will contribute to the enhancement of traffic conditions, both as regards safety and effortless traffic.
