AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT

The  air quality management is one of the targets of Egnatia Odos A.E., connected with the  life quality of the inhabitants of adjacent to Egnatia Motorway settlements and also with the policy against global heating (Kyoto Protocol).

Egnatia Odos A.E. sets up a program for the monitoring of the concentration of pollutant gases in certain areas along the axis of the motorway, based on the stipulations of the Joined Ministerial Decisions incorporating the Environmental Provisions.

The air pollutants found are: CO, NO2, SO2, O3, PM10, BTX êáé Pb. At the same time, each measurement point serves for the monitoring of basic meteorological parameters, such as speed and wind direction, which considerably affect the levels of atmospheric pollution.

Furthermore, most of Egnatia Motorway tunnels are equipped with CO and NO meters, constantly measuring the levels of the specific pollutants, in order to preserve the air quality in the tunnels.

NOISE POLLUTION MANAGEMENT

Egnatia Odos A.E. aims to minimize the noise nuisance caused by the motorway’s operation.

To this effect, a monitoring program of the Road Traffic Noise (R.T.N.) is set up in residential districts, having as main criteria the distance of the settlements from the Motorway and the existent traffic load.

In areas where, in accordance to the current legislation, taking of measures relative to Noise Protection is considered necessary, the efficiency of all measures will be examined (noise barriers, special bituminous carpets, special planting, etc), for the selection of the most viable solution.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

The throwing of waste is prohibited by the Road Traffic Code (K.O.K), articles 12, § 2 and 3. The pollution of the motorway caused by its users can have multiple negative results, such as pollution of the adjacent waters and grounds, creation of an unaesthetic image of the motorway and causing of dangers for drivers and passengers.

The contribution of users in the optimization of the Motorway’s environment and in the reduction of the produced waste volume is determinative.

Egnatia Odos A.E. in order to reinforce environmental knowledge and awareness and to sensitize the users of the motorway indicatively presents the time needed for the disintegration of common waste collected by the company itself.

The company, using special crews gathers any kind of waste from the road surface and the central reserves. The management and the final disposal of waste are based on the Environmental Provisions and the currently existent legislation. The annual cost of cleaning is about 600.000€, which amounts to 5% of the total annual cost of the motorway maintenance.

Moreover, in the company’s offices exists a program for the recycling of paper, glass, plastic, empty batteries, empty toner cartridges of printers, copy machines and fax machines, which is an initiative of the ecologic group, formed especially for this cause.

INDICATIVE TIMES NEEDED FOR THE DISINTEGRATION OF WASTE

Cigarette ends 1 – 12 years
Fruit skins 2 years
Plastic bags 10 – 20 years
Aluminum tins 80 – 100 years
Plastic bottles Non disintegratable
Glass Non disintegratable

WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT

Egnatia Odos A.E., in order to protect surface and ground waters prepares a program for the monitoring and assessment of the Motorway’s run-off waters quality at the points of discharge to the adjacent receivers.

The pollution parameters presenting greater interest and are directly related to the motorways operation are: COD, Total Solids, Fats and Oils, Heavy Metals, etc.

The selection of the areas and points for the carrying out of measurements is based on the Environmental Provisions and the sensitivity of each eco-system.

LIMITATION OF ENERGY CONSUMPTIONÓ

Egnatia Odos A.E., in order to limit the energy consumption, takes certain actions, such as:

Program of Lighting Measurements in Tunnels.
Regular Maintenance Program.
Time-schedule of Lighting.
Energy Management Program in Tunnels.
Limitation of the electricity consumption based on the timely detection of damages, the optimization of the road lighting operation and the limitation of possible unnecessary operations.

PROTECTION OF THE BIODIVERSITY

Regular Cleaning and Maintenance of Box Culverts and of Wildlife Underpasses.
Maintenance of the motorway fencing and monitoring of fauna mortality, caused by collisions with the passing vehicles
Restoration of disturbed surfaces
Control of the quantity of salt used for snow ploughing of the Motorway.
