Vertical Axis Xanthi – Echinos -Greek-Bulgarian Borders
In 2008, EGNATIA ODOS A.E. was delegated the responsibility for the vertical axis Xanthi-Echinos-Greek-Bulgarian borders. The axis is 60 km long including Xanthi bypass and its link with the motorway.
The construction of the axis was included in the interstate agreement between Greece-Bulgaria for the development of three road links between the two countries (Drama-Exochi, Xanthi-Echinos, Komotini-Nimfaia).
This agreement determined the geometric characteristics of the axes. The cross-section is 7.5/10.5m long, with one traffic lane per direction, while the design speed amounts to 80 km/hour with possible speed reduction on some sections due to geomorphologic or environmental requirements.
EGNATIA ODOS A.E. commenced the preparation of the designs for the northern part of the section “Melivia-Greek-Bulgarian borders”, approximately 20 km long, as well as for Xanthi bypass and of the road link to the Egnatia Motorway, at the south end. The designs are funded by the Regional Operation Program of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace (ROP) with a budget that amounts to € 6 M. In parallel, the construction of preparatory works in order to open forestry roads that will secure access for geotechnical investigations, surveying works, etc.
